PVC is Hongyi Chemical's Good Friend.

PVC, also known as polyvinyl chloride plastic, is produced through the polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) using various initiators such as peroxides or azo compounds, or through exposure to light and heat. This process forms a polymer that is essential in producing both vinyl chloride homopolymer and vinyl chloride copolymer, collectively referred to as polyvinyl chloride resin.

The material itself is a white powder with an amorphous structure and only a small degree of branching. PVC is highly sensitive to heat and light, and it begins to decompose at temperatures above 90°C. When exposed to temperatures exceeding 130°C or prolonged sunlight, it decomposes to release hydrogen chloride. This decomposition results in automatic catalytic degradation, causing discoloration and deterioration in the material's physical and mechanical properties. To address this, PVC often requires the addition of heat stabilizers to prevent the degradation of hydrogen chloride. Additionally, lubricants are incorporated to enhance the flow and demolding properties of the solution during manufacturing.

However, despite its versatile properties, PVC can encounter challenges, especially when it comes to its appearance. One such challenge is the yellowing of PVC plastic, which occurs due to the catalytic decomposition of the material. This is where fluorescent whitening agents come into play, helping to counteract the discoloration and restore the bright, white appearance of PVC products.

The Role of Fluorescent Whitening Agents in PVC

Fluorescent whitening agents are crucial in improving the visual appeal of polyvinyl chloride plastic. One of the main reasons for incorporating these agents is to combat the yellowing effect caused by PVC's degradation process. These agents help ensure that PVC products maintain their visual integrity even when exposed to harsh environmental conditions.

Another significant factor in the use of whitening agents in PVC processing is the inclusion of recycled materials. The recycling process often results in PVC with different hues, which can be a problem for manufacturers who require consistent color in their products. Adding a fluorescent whitening agent helps to normalize the color of recycled PVC, removing any yellowing and restoring its appearance to a consistent white vinyl plastic. This is especially important in industries where aesthetic quality is essential, such as in the production of consumer goods and decorative materials.
